  • Empty the barrel of liquid to reduce weight before moving between locations.
  • Don’t use the pump fitting to lift or manoeuvre the barrel.
  • The barrels must be dry before first filling with product.
  • Only fill with product correlating to the signage on the barrel.
  • Barrels should be located with sufficient space to slide / roll out for refilling.
  • Please don’t use marker pen on the label or barrel itself.
  • The label is front facing.  If your barrels are located in a window we can give you labels on the back also to be visible from the window.

Filling Up the Barrel

  • Stockists should pick the ‘40L Deposit into Barrel’ or ‘60L Deposit into Barrel' option on the SESI website when buying the product to go into the barrel.

  • The SESI driver will deposit the product straight into the barrel and not leave tubs or packaging on-site.

Pumping and Refilling Advice

  • Careful and slow pumping will reduce foaming and reduce the chance of overspill

  • Liquid flows on upstroke and downstroke

  • The pump can fill a litre bottle in under 20 seconds, regardless of liquid viscosity

  • After pumping, twist the nozzle up to prevent drips

  • Keep the lid on the barrel at all times to prevent contamination

  • Remove any object that falls into the liquid to prevent bacterial contamination.
  • Children should be supervised when refilling.
  • Don’t undo the drain plug at the bottom of the barrel.

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Washing of the tank is advised after 1000L or once a year of refilling, whichever comes first. You can choose the “Wash Service” item on the website if you want SESI wash the barrel rather than wash it yourself (see below).

  • To drain the tank, use the pump to empty as much as possible, then unscrew the drain plug (front bottom left) to pour out the final dregs

  • After washing, it is important to completely dry the tank before refilling

  • If you are starting to have problems with the pumps, check the TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE below.  If you can’t resolve the problem inform SESI by choosing the “Barrel Repair Request” item on the website order form and writing in Notes with Order what the problem is you are experiencing.  Alternatively you can email orders@sesi.org.uk, or call 01865 604059 to alert us of a problem.  We will take the following action:

Troubleshooting Problems

These are the common issues that you may be able to sort yourself or may need us to step in:

  • PUMP SLIDING UP AND DOWN:  The reason the pump will slide up and down in the boss on tank top is usually because it has got wet with detergent spillage.  Resolve by…

    • Undoing the nut on the boss
    • Slide pump up and out of boss
    • Wipe down the shaft of the pump and dry with a towel.  Similarly wipe down the rubber wash in the boss to remove any deposits (the washer can be taken out)
    • Reassemble the pump into the tank and tighten the nut on the boss.
  • PUMP AND BOSS COME LOOSE: If the boss in the tank top is loose and the pump is waving around it means the lock nut on the inside of the tank has come loose.  Resolve by…

    • Reaching in through the filler cover on the tank to tighten the lock nut underneath the boss.
    • If there is no lock nut remaining it has fallen completely off and needs to be retrieved from the liquid below (to prevent bacterial growth) and retightened onto the boss
    • If the boss itself is loose the glue joint between it and the tank has failed and SESI will swap the tank for a replacement.  Please contact us.
  • PUMP LEAKING AT HANDLE END:  If you are seeing product coming out of the top of the pump shaft the seals may be worn or the housing a bit loose.  Resolve by…

    • Hand tightening the cap (clockwise) on the top of the pump shaft, where the handle knob comes through the pump shaft.
    • If this doesn’t resolve it SESI will replace the pump internal seals or swap the pump for a new one.  Please contact us.
  • PUMP STIFF TO PUMP:  Usually this occurs with vinegar.  The acidity of the liquid hardens the rubber gromit in the pump mechanism.  Resolve by…

    • Letting us know this is occurring.  We will swap your pump with a refurbished one.
